Page number: 074/2007
Purpose of meeting: EXEMPT INFORMATION – TO CONSIDER
PASSING THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION IN RESPECT OF THE
ITEMS LISTED BELOW.
That the press and public be excluded from the meeting for the following item of
business on the grounds that they involve likely disclosure of information
prejudicial to the public interest as defined in the Local Government Act 1972. BL
proposed, seconded DE, with the exception of PC against, all in favour.
Position of town clerk.
Date: 19th June, 2007
Attendees: Mayor Cllr B. Lush (BL),
Cllrs J. Pearce (JP), M Baber (MB) P. Clark. (PC), D Elliott
(DE) P Lessels (PL) R. Ireland (RI), R Rotchell (RR) A. Shaw
(AS).
The town clerk asked to make a statement to the members. BL advised him against this. The
town clerk continued stating that he had done nothing wrong and that he had purposely been
uncooperative with the police as he would like the matter to go to court.
The clerk left the meeting and BL asked him to wait outside until a decision had been reached.
BL stated that he had been advised of the clerk’s arrest last Monday and that he had sought
advice from NCDC regarding what action, if any, should be taken. NCDC advised that the
members should decide if the clerk should be suspended and advised BL how to carry this out
should it be agreed by the members.
Extensive discussion took place.
MB proposed that the advice from NCDC should be taken and that it should be made clear to
the clerk that suspension is a neutral act and will be for as brief a period as possible, pending the
outcome of any investigation, seconded JP, seven in favour, one abstention, DE against.
The members were advised that the ex clerk Ron Hart would act on a temporary basis as acting
town clerk.
All Cllrs left with the exception of BL and JP who remained to advise the town clerk of their
decision.
