Hiya Al

For the 'org' site I thought you might like to include this link to the recently formed opposition group.

www.stinc.co.uk

Stop Turbines In North Cornwall may be able to give visitors to the site an alternative to the supposedly 'green' explanation provided by the developers.

Hi Eddie Thanks for the mail.

I supported the application a few years back for Centreparcs to build on Davidstow, which would have brought 300/500 jobs to the area. This was turned down because of grazing rights on common land. The alternative is a windfarm that would not affect grazing rights. I have stood beneath them – and find little noise.Cattle that graze appear to be unaffected by them. And I have some very attractive pictures taken of windmills over the years that I am proud of. If it is environmentally friendly and means cheaper electricity for all of us, then I must admit,I am all for it!

I will post your link but at the moment it is the only comment, other than my own that I have.

Regards
Alan

Hiya Al

Like you I was a great believer - until the truth and implications are investigated.
Try and get your hands on a copy of the leaflet called 'Harry Rotter' which questions
many of the suppositions most of us accept.

Cheers

Well camelford has voted, some will say the balance has been redressed.
The old Town Council has gone!

On Thursday 3rd. May 2007 Camelfordians went to the polls,
the turnout was 54.1% with a total of 2108 votes.
11 new Town Councilors were elected.
(8 of these members under the free car parking banner)
see results in detail
I talk with many people about the car park and I do not believe this is the main issue.
Some are for the charging, for maintenance etc. others against, but virtually everone
feels that the Council went about things in the wrong manner.
Introducing Pay-and-Display meters and then holding a referendum?
Then ignoring the results of that referendum!

Enough Said!
We now hopfully have closure on the whole unfortunate affair.
Our new Town Council Will do what the people want?

They'd Better!

11may 2007 the Car Park charges are suspended until 17th. July

Hello

Excellent forum. Only just discovered it. Will be a regular reader in future.

You have one input from a Mavis Oakey, dated 15-05-06, who was interested in information about the Old Workhouse as her family had decendents that lived there.
I am a current resident of part of the workhouse and am also trying to gather
information about it.

Unfortunately the message did not carry any contact details.
Is it possible that you would have any? If so please could you either send them
to me or, if this is not possible for privacy reasons,
could you forward this E-Mail to her by way of a request to get in touch.

My details are Dave Ashton on ashtonda1@aol.com

Thanks and Best Wishes

I have been asked to explain a SAFARI SUPPER.
Recently we had two in Camelford in the space of a month, both were fundraisers for different organisations, so I copied this off a website in Killin in Scotland.

It gets its name from the fact that
people travel from house to house for a three course meal.
Hence " GOING ON A SAFARI".
Folk volunteer to be hosts and depending how many do volunteer this dictates how many people can travel and partake of the hosts hospitality. Travellers go to one house for a starter then move onto another for a main course and then to another for a sweet. Some hosts take 4 guests and others take six of even eight depending on the size of their house. It means that different people meet at each house and is an excellent way of meeting others in the village over a meal and glass or SEVERAL glasses of wine. You never meet the same people twice.
The guests who have difficulty in walking to their next house are conveyed by cars manned by volunteer drivers
This means then that each host caters for a three course meal with wine. The travelling people pay £15 per ticket and the hosts cover the costs of the meal and wine.
The money from the tickets goes to charity or village projects.
At the end of the evening the people who have been on "walk about" and hosts all meet up at a local hotel for coffee and/or a dram or two.

Our first supper cost the participants £10.00 a head and raised £1200.00 for Cancer Research see picture.

Here the organisers at the end of the evening with raffle prizes,
in the Con Club.

The second was in aid of Camelford Fireworks Display, and also raised £600.00.
This party ended up in the Liberal Club.

Both event were popular and well supported.
Well done all! A

Hello -
I have been looking at the churches page on your website, hoping to be able to identify the attached location.
It came from members of the family long ago, and was taken on their honeymoon in 1902.
They stayed in Plymouth and toured Cornwall as well. We know they visited the Fowey area, and also, I believe,
places in North Cornwall.

It could possibly be somewhere in Devon, but Cornwall is most likely.
There's a monkey puzzle tree among the gravestones which will be very mature now if it has survived!

Although from the West Country myself, I have absolutely no idea!
Does anyone connected with the website have any suggestions please ?
Any help much appreciated -
Michael.

CAMELFORD FC CELEBRATE FOOTBALL FUNDING SUCCESS

Footballers in Camelford were celebrating today following a £13150 grant awarded to Camelford Football Club by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, a partner organisation of the Football Foundation.

The cash bonanza will allow the club to build two new covered stands for spectators. A club spokesman said “one of the requirements for our entry into the South West Peninsula League was that we provide hard standing and covered accommodation for spectators. One of the stands will provide seating for 50 people and the other terraced standing room for an additional 70 plus provision for 3 wheelchairs. The project will cost £27,000 in total and the remainder of the money has come from our own fundraising events and a very generous donation of £2000 from a local building company, Poltair Properties Ltd.”

The Football Foundation is dedicated to revitalising the grass roots of the game, constructing modern football facilities, developing football as a force for social cohesion and as a vehicle for education in communities throughout the country. Funded by the FA Premier League, The Football Association, Sports England and the Government, the Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity with a £45m budget going straight into the heart of football.

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund welcomed this latest funding boost: “We warmly congratulate Camelford Football Club for their hard work and dedication in securing this award. Grass roots football is the lifeblood of the game in this country which is why it is vital that projects such as this now have the benefit of FSIF cash.”

Hi Please could you put this on your web site.
Iam in the process of a small research project on former T.A Drill Halls in Cornwall.
In particular would be most interested to hear from anyone who served at the Drill Hall Camelford. Any photographs, reminisances of the 1947-1967 era would be greatly appreciated.

Local Produce Market

It was recently reported that discussions are taking place between the Town Council, the Town Forum and local traders about the introduction of a local produce market, similar to the one in Lostwithiel. This to be held perhaps once or twice a month, to bring people into the town.

I understand that there is a possibility of a grant from N.C.D.C. to get the market up and running and research is currently taking place to test opinions and options available.

Should stalls be allowed in the entrance to Enfield park?
Should they be under cover in the Camelford Hall?
Perhaps the coach area of Churchfield Carpark could be used?
Have the market on a week day or a Sunday?
What about a Car Boot sale at the same time?

Your input is required please!

Camelford Traders Committed !

Traders in Camelford have been awarded a certificate of Commendation in recognition of their support for local food producers.

The town and traders were entered into the Best Local Food Awards 2005/2006 which was launched in April 2005, through the Western Morning News and sponsored by other major organisations.

Camelford's Chamber of Commerce Vice-chairman Julian Harman who was responsible for submitting and putting together the entry, said that despite all the adverse publicity the Town has had over the last year this award show's that the towns traders are committed to providing a first class service and fully support local producers.

Mr Harman would like to thank the Towns Forum and Chamber of Commerce for fully supporting the entry, but was disappointed that the Town Council had failed to give their full support to something that was a FREE Promotional chance for the Town. Pictured are some of the local businesses with copies of the award Certificate

Dear Sirs,
I was just reading your Camelford site and in the eulogy for Mr. Len Boundy given by Mr. J.H. Barfoot, there is a mention of Caryl Rowe and Ian Hicks as tenors with The Minstrels.

I have been doing genealogy research on my ROWE family from Camelford and wondering if this Caryl Rowe might somehow be related. Might it be possible to forward my note to see if there is a connection.

My Rowe Family lived on Victoria Row for many years - my great-grandfather, Richard Rowe, had a brother John who stayed in Camelford after Richard came to the states. I am hoping Caryl might be descended from John & Sarah Rowe (b. 1848) - they had two sons Henry & Horace... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks, Janet Rowe - USA  Tinarsvp@aol.com

Hello'
I have just been on your site looking for museum information, I am trying to find any information on the old Workhouse in Camelford, and wondered if there were any old photographs anywhere. I have a relative who was there with her brothers in the early 1900's. I noticed on your site Tregoodwell mentioned, which is another place I am very interested in, there wasn't anything written about it though in the Parish information.
I would be interested to know if there is indeed a museum in Camelford.
Whilst here I read the eulogy on Len Boundy. I have never heard of this wonderful man, but reading what his dear friend wrote brought a lump to my throat! he was obviously a much loved and respected inhabitant of Camelford.

Community Health Concerns

Residents of Camelford are probably aware of the results of the autopsy conducted recently on a victim of the water contamination incident in 1988. That autopsy showed a definite link between aluminium and Alzheimer's like effects in the brain. It is of course preferable if the presence of aluminium is discovered long before the effects are terminal.

Aluminium entering the body and causing an overload is rapidly sequestered into tissues and organs, including the brain. The effects may be sub clinical, but chronic, and include CFS, sarcoidosis, Fanconi Syndrome, mild cognitive impairment, anaemia, immune dysfunction, fatigue, spongiotic dermatitis, and eventually Alzheimer’s like disease. As per the recent autopsy and the high brain readings, the sequestered aluminium is only identified by tissue tests or biopsies.

Tissue tests of hair, nails, semen, and skin are the most viable means of early screening. A high test should be validated by a second repeat test. Tissue testing is the only reliable way to detect a historical exposure, or an accumulating exposure. Since tissue levels are not necessarily directly related to blood levels at any particular time, they should be compared to blood levels, and the validation should be by repeat tissue testing whilst under no medications or supplements.

Since metals have a long half-life in the body, their effects will be mostly evidenced as chronic fatigue, or CFS. Unless blood tests are taken within a few days of the end of exposure, it is unlikely that practitioners will be able to recognise the cause of the diffuse symptoms. Tissue testing will show metal if it has been sequestered, and the normal decay rate indicates that it may be evident in such tests up to 20 years after exposure.

Appropriate tests for aluminium induced CFS, or sarcoidosis are as follows:
1. Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE)
2. 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D
3. 1-25 Hydroxy Vitamin D
4. sIL2R
5. Adenosine Deaminase (ADA)
6. Lymphocyte Subset Panel, CD 4:8 Ratio

A secondary effect associated with sarcoidosis is spongiotic dermatitis, or eczema, caused by the Th1 immune imbalance, a lymphoproliferative disorder characteristic of the sarcoidosis. This association does not appear to be recognized by many dermatologists, probably due to the difficulty in testing for cytokines and 1,25D.

Appropriate tests for aluminium induced Fanconi Syndrome, or Renal Tubular Disease, are as follows:
1. Serum & Urine Amino Acids (quantification by HPLC), (preferred test)
2. Serum & Urine Protein Electrophoresis
3. Urine Phosphate & Potassium

I would urge all those exposed to be tested as soon as possible. The majority of these tests above should be covered by the National Health Scheme, even if the hair tissue tests are not.

Entry 2:  Re: Windmills or Pylons.

I would rather the beauty than the beast, but the windmills do not generate sufficient energy to meet our needs, and  I need electricity. So, until we bury the electricity cables underground it will have to be pylons. The amount of windmills needed to supply North Cornwall's energy needs would leave a far bigger footprint on the environment.

One of the best things about coming to shop in Camelford id that you don't have to pay to park.  I believe Camelford would slowly die if pay and display parking was introduced.  If there are certain individuals who abuse the facility, it is only they who should be targeted, not the customers who keep the business in Camelford alive for everyone.

The Story Continues

I listened to Radio Cornwall on the day after the referendum and one of the questions in the evening "news quiz" was:  "which town in North Cornwall will not have to pay car park charges after the result of last nights referendum?" Answer: "Camelford!"

WRONG!!!

Needless to say the charges stay!

For a trial period of a year and a day?

So will the Town Council go away?

To let the majority stop Pay & Display!

Verbatim copy of article in the Sunday Telegraph          18th.September2005.

" If Mr. Blair is ever troubled by the fact that he governs with the support of less than 25% of the electorate, he might take cheer from the example set by Camelford town council in north Cornwall.  Last month it staged a referendum on whether motorists should be charged for using the town's main car park, until now paid for by a modest percentage of local rates.

No fewer than 88% of the votes were in favour of retaining the present system, and 75% specifically against pay and display.  The town councillors, however have voted by seven to one to reject the peoples verdict and to impose a charging scheme.  They explained that there had been only a 31% turnout (about the same as that which elected them), and that all those who stayed at home might well have voted for
pay and display.

Since charging was introduced, traders have reported a significant drop in takings, as people take advantage of free parking in nearby towns.  Angry residents now hope, at the next election, to replace their councillors with some who better grasp the meaning of the word "democracy"."

Well...?!

don't forget, all your views to info@camelford.org

 PRESS RELEASE

At last weeks Camelford's Chamber of Commerce it was decided after a suggestion from a member of the public following a consultation with his local MP that a local residents campaign group be formed to fight the Town Councils undemocratic decision to retain “Pay & Display” after having ignored the recent local referendum which showed overwhelming support to keep the car park FREE to the user. It was agreed that this should be done as local residents had called for the referendum, although the Town Council still insist that the Chamber of trade had instigated it. The new group will be called the “Camelford Association of Residents” or C.A.R for short and the first meeting will take place tonight Thurs 22nd Sept 2005 in the Darlington Hotel Camelford at 7.30pm the meeting will be open to anyone who wishes to join and further details can be obtained by telephoning Edward Mccormick 01840 212572 or Tracy Burgis on 01840 213692. or email eddieandada@yahoo.co.uk

The Chamber of Commerce fully supported the idea stating that the Councils decision had damaged local trade and that Pay & Display was affecting all Camelford ratepayers. www.camres.org.uk

CAMELFORD TOWN COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

Purpose of meeting: Town Council Thursday Meeting

Date .: 1st. Seprember,2005

Attendees: The Town Mayor - J Finch(JF).

The Deputy  Mayor - B. Grills(BG)

Cllrs S, Elford(SE), J. Iles(JI),  B. Lush (BL), D. Pierce(DP) J. Sanders(JS)

 A Shaw (AS), M. Williams(MW)-

Apologies: Cllr L- Crockford(LC) will join the meeting   later

Public Participation:

Mr T. Tague.  Stated that the recently distributed council fact sheet was incorrect, although the Chamber of Commerce put out a questionnaire reference Churchfield Car Park, they did not call for a referendum.  At a public meeting called for, a member of the public proposed a referendum.

In his opinion the results of the referendum showed that 88% of the votes taken, agreed with keeping the cost of running Churchfield Car Park on the rates  The turnout for the vote was similar to the last time that the election was held for town councillors, saying this, if the vote was good enough to put the council in place, it should be good enough to remove the "Pay & Display".  Mr. Tague ended by saying that the council should remove the "Pay & Display" and return to free car parking, which has been seen to be the people's  wish.

Richard Boundy stated that just because 69per cent of the electorate did not vote it did not mean that they supported "Pay & Display".

Mrs.T. Burgis stated that the election times were unfair as shift workers could not vote.

Mary Pearce stated that the council had misunderstood the way Camelford people think and acted in a way that was not expected.

Mr. H. Huntley Originally the council purchased the car park to keep it free, and this is the objection  to "Pay & Display".  Mr. Huntley felt that letters reference the car park should be read out when the council gives its decision on the referendum results.

Salley Holden Business in town was being adversely affected due to "Pay & Display".  Visitors now stay for a shorter time period.  Large out of town shopsare already causing local shops to struggle without the introduction of "Pay & Display".

Council's response to the referendum results:

The mayor gave each member a chance to put their views before any decision was made.  With the exception of BL all members present spoke in support of the "Pay & Display".  It was proposed that the "Pay & Display" order be left in place and reviewed at the end of the financial year.  Proposed AS, seconded SE, seven in favour, BL, against, JS, abstained.

Camelford Association of Residents

CAR calls for a return to Democracy

A cross section of Camelford residents attended the first meeting of CAR (Camelford Association of Residents) held at the Darlington Inn, Camelford on Thursday 22nd September.  Feelings are running high in Camelford as the Town Council refuse to acknowledge the feelings of local people after a referendum held in the town voted strongly against the introduction of Pay and Display meters in Churchfield Car Park.  CAR are calling for a return to Democracy and ask for the Town Council to ‘at least’ remove the Pay and Display meters, and ‘at best’ hold an election of a new Town Council.

Melanie Baber, who voted in favour of the introduction of Car Park charges at the time of the referendum, was elected Chairperson at the meeting, Melanie stated “This situation has gone far beyond the initial issue, I voted for charges at the recent referendum, but we should all be willing to go with the majority, and accept the feelings of the whole community.  The current Town Council are not willing to do this and have lost the confidence of the people of Camelford by their actions”.  Eddie McCormick was proposed as Vice Chairperson and Ada McCormick as Secretary.

A Public Meeting has been called for Thursday 29th September 7.30pm at St. Thomas’s Church Hall, Churchfield, Camelford, to discuss the next steps to be taken in the formation of a working residents committee.  Ada McCormick, secretary, said after the meeting “We are all new to this and would appreciate any help that the residents of Camelford, who were not aware, or unable to attend the first meeting, can offer”.  Until a full committee is elected and formal contact details available residents can contact us by letter which can be dropped off at The Liberal Club, Camelford or via e-mail at
