Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury

St. Thomas Church is on the right of the car park entrance, built 1938, on the grounds of the original chapel erected by the town Burgesses in 1311 and dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury. The early church was despoiled at the reformation and was demolished.

As you drive into Camelford from the north you come to the main car park on your right.  Further along in the main parking area is Camelford Medical Centre, with four GPs in attendance. There are over 110 parking spaces and coach park.

 So called because the original Sir James Smith’s Grammar School was located 100 yards along on the left. The buildings are now used as local council offices. You can see some original old Cornish buildings.

Where the bridge is now was the site of the original Ford in Camelford. The first bridge was probably built of timber around 1500 but as traffic increased over the years, it was replaced by a stone one. A recent innovation was to lower or deepen the river bed to allow flood waters to flow under the bridge unimpeded. Many a time in the past the lower half of the town has been flooded.

The Mason’s Arms was an old coaching inn built around 1600. It was a regular stop for travellers on the London to Falmouth road.

The Free Methodist Chapel was built in 1837 by Wesleyans who had been banned from using the old Methodist Chapel on back street because they rebelled against the Central Methodist Conference.

Chapel Street

Back Street to the locals, runs parallel to Fore St. There are alleyways, as you walk along, connecting the two. Half way there is the site of the old slaughterhouse, and opposite, the old Chapel and Sunday School – now private dwellings.

Between many of the shops on this side of the street there are alleyways and passages that lead down to the river. This passage leads to the path along the river and a pleasant walk to Fenteroon bridge and on to Advent church. Be warned, you may need wellies.
